A debut single is clearly an important step for any band. For the band it’s (hopefully!) the first step on the road to critical and commercial success, but fundamentally a bad start is hard to recover from. For critics, once the knives are drawn their instincts tell them to keep on stabbing until there’s nothing left but a bloody mess.
Happily for Beads they’ve sidestepped knife-wielding maniac. Evil is a nice number, sung in a wailing Bob Dylan tone (with a little bit of John Power of Cast thrown in), and backed by arpeggios and dreamy harmonies that are redolent of some of The Beatles finest interludes.
All in all it makes for a strong start from an exciting new band.
